The non-stick inner bowl is marked for level indication so measuring rice and water is simplified too. Plus the removable glass lid has a steam vent for easy escape of steam during cooking.

But mind this!

It is not just for rice cooking. The BPA-free steaming basket is ideal for steaming veggies or white meat. so this serves the additional purpose of a steamer as well.

Buying Guide

Fluffy rice requires some hard work. And while you have set your mind on getting yourself a rice cooker to minimize your efforts, you still need to put some in searching for one that suits you most from our list of 10 best rice cookers in Australia.

There are a few features that differ from brand to brand each catering to various needs, so you might need to look into them to find out what can be most useful to you. This is why we have laid down all the different details and specifications so you pick an appliance that is the most compatible with you.

So let’s get started!

Size Matters!

How much rice do you need to make?

This usually depends on the number of people you serve your rice dishes too. Most cookers usually come in a 7-10 cups capacity, which is an ideal serving for a normal-sized family. So unless you have a wholesome crowd to feed rice to, they should be the right size.

While you may be tempted to buy a bigger size, keep in mind that more capacity means an increment on the price tag and also the cleaning time and efforts required post-cooking.

So choose wisely!

Lid Matters!

You read it right!

When it comes to rice cooking, the lid matters more than it does elsewhere.

Two types of lids are offered in rice cookers:

  • Unsealed
  • Sealed

The unsealed lids are usually made of transparent glass and offer a convenient peeking through for all the curious and impatient cooks out there. Plus, they fall in the more affordable category. But they are cheaper for a reason. The starchy rice water can bubble and splatter out while cooking, leaving a messy kitchen counter.

This is why we have sealed lids. They are opaque so you’ll have to contain your excitement till the cooker is done cooking, but they offer a cleaner cooking procedure and hence are easier to use. But then again, all that is good comes with a price and clean kitchen counters are definitely good if you ask me!

And Money Definitely Matters Too!

We know how hard-earned your money is. And this is why we advise you to spend it on something that will give you the most value for it.

Many brands offer many different cooking modes in just one appliance. For instance, a rice cooker can also be used for steaming veggies and dumplings or preparing baby porridge, and on the other hand, some slow cookers or pressure cookers can also be used to cook rice.

So why go for a plain machine that can only cook white jasmine rice?

A little research could save you hundreds of bucks.

Does it Clean Easy?

The ease of cleaning is a very important aspect for cooking appliances to satisfy the Monica in you (F.R.I.E.N.D.S theme song plays in the background).

With rice cookers, if you opt for one that has a removable lid, the lid itself will be easy to clean but your countertop will need some scrubbing. On the contrary, sparkling fixed lids are trickier to achieve but leave your countertop untouched.

Also, the removable cooking pan comes in metal or non-stick, with the non-stick variant being resistant to any rice sticking at the bottom.

Not Hungry Yet?

Have you cooked your rice a little earlier than when you are hungry?

Then there is a very handy option provided by most manufacturers of keeping it warm until you are ready to serve. With this fancy keep-warm function your rice can stay at the serving temperature for 6 or even 24 hours in some brands.

So if you are a fan of managing time and getting things done beforehand, you might want to look for an option that provides a keep-warm time sufficient enough for you.

Smartness Helps!

There is a very smart technology available in intelligent rice cookers, sometimes called ‘the fuzzy logic’, that enables them to adjust the cooking tie according to the water level. So it doesn’t matter if you add too much or too little water to your rice. The machine will sense and cook your rice accordingly.

So getting flawless rice in every attempt is not a dream anymore!

What Type of Rice?

Ask yourself this:

What type or types of rice do I need to cook regularly?

If it’s just plain white rice, the market is loaded with options. But if you deal with brown and other grain varieties, you might need to look for models that offer appropriate cooking times and settings for nailing them.

Tips and Tricks for Getting the Perfect Rice in Rice Cookers

  • Always wash your rice 3-4 times before cooking. This gets a lot of starch out of them and hence, they don’t stick when cooked.
  • Add a spoonful of butter to the pot when you add rice.
  • Let your rice sit in the pot covered, for 10 minutes after cooking them for fluffier rice.
  • Keep your rice in the refrigerator after cooking it. Reheated rice tastes better and especially if you fry them.

If your rice is undercooked, add a little water, shut the lid and recook for a few minutes. The recooked rice won’t be as good but will still be edible.
